Here’s a tool that could revolutionise website editing and put some web developers out of business in the process.
Buildor comes from a two-man UK team and aims to put the power of Dreamweaver into a web app.
Simply by entering the URL of a website, you’re able to edit it straight away from your browser. Edit text, replace images, change fonts – it’s all possible in no time.
Buildor is aiming at two markets with two different products. Firstly, Buildor Lite isĀ availableĀ to try in beta now. Targeted at small businesses who have simple websites and no easy way to edit them, the Lite tool allows easy and quick editing.
Many businesses resort to paying a web developer every time they want changes made to their static website. It’s exactly these businesses that will find Buildor so useful. All they need is the URL of their site and the FTP login details and Buildor does the rest by replacing HTML and CSS code on the fly.
Some web developers make good money charging for making simple updates to static sites for small businesses. With Buildor, the businesses can do it themselves and save a lot of money, even if they lack technical knowledge. For the most part, it really is as easy as editing a Word document.
Buildor Pro on the way
Meanwhile, Buildor is around three months away from launching the first version of its Pro version. Aimed at experienced web developers, this allows precise control over every aspect of a website using a WYSIWYG interface similar to Dreamweaver.
Relax, pro devs, the Buildor team insists that all the code generated by the app is standards compliant with no proprietary elements or ‘code bloat’ to cause problems in the future. We’ll take a look at Buildor Pro closer to its launch.
For now, give Buildor Lite a try. It works best with static sites. I made a mess of The Next Web homepage when I tried to edit it thanks to the complex CSS in place on our blog. I didn’t have the FTP details available, so the changes weren’t uploaded and my job remains intact! However, use it with a simpler site and you’ll be editing away in a flash.
Buildor Lite is available to use for free at the moment although “very affordable” pricing plans are on the way once it comes out of beta.

This is a great tool, but I can't see it taking any serious web developer out of business. Companies pay tons of money in order to have a unique web presence- this is just based on editing and changes.

Yeah this tool is ideal for companies with static websites, but as another commentator pointed out, companies do pay good money to have a unique presence on the web.
And no tool can really create a wholly unique website, with the ability to integrate other online scripts such as a forum with vBulletin, a store with osCommerce – the web developer which specialises in custom web creation are safe for the minute.
But no doubt sometime in the future, somebody is going to come out with a tool which can do all of this, and make it easy for the home user. In the meantime, developers can rest in the knowledge that their earning a pretty decent living.

Can it add new pages, I wonder, or just edit existing ones?

looks very impressive although there have been similar tools in the past that haven't really taken off. Will have a play.

Oh no, serious web developers will be fine. The fly-by-night “Ā£300 to change the text and an image” merchants could be in trouble though.

Yes Andrew, this is a good start but I'd like to see a full tool for starting websites from scratch in future. For now, I think this is a great tool for people with basic sites and no web skills – there are lots of people in that bracket.

At the moment it can just edit existing ones. Fingers crossed for a fuller-featured tool in the future, although Buildor Pro looks pretty awesome from the demo I was given yesterday,

Really pleased to see we are producing a tool that people can see real value in – couple of quick points.
1) http://BuildorLite.com is in Beta – we'd really appreciate feedback on bugs etc (there are links on the site itself)
We know, for example, there are better ways to deal with existing Flash content and JavaScript can cause issues (although we disable it as far as possible – switching back on, on Preview/Save)
Any problems you see we'd love your feedback.
2) Martin's point about static content is important. BuildorLite is a tool for content owners with no existing CMS. If they have a CMS (or lots of dynamic server side code) then they've already implemented a solution – trying to use another editing system on top of that is going to cause issues. In a lot of cases you will be able to edit content but you won't be able to save it back into your existing system.
We reckon a significant percentage of small/medium businesses have sites built for them without any CMS included (due to budgets etc) – that's the BuildorLite audience – zero setup, nothing to install, no technical knowledge required etc.
3) We love designers and developers! Keep an eye out for BuildorPro which brings a whole swathe of advanced tools for building content from scratch without any hosting restrictions, fixed templates etc. Just like Dreamweaver in the cloud but with loving created, compliant code! <!–/close shameless promotion–>

You can add new pages – just start with an existing page, add new images, text, links etc and when you go to Publish the page just give it a new file name. You can then link to it from existing pages as normal.

I would venture that there aren't many medium-large size companies that have static content websites. Most of those companies have websites served dynamically via a server-side language and many already have CMS built in. This tool will be nice for small businesses but most web developers don't make their main income from serving small businesses (frankly I'd much rather have 1 big client than 20 small ones… MUCH less hassle for me and the big ones are willing to pay for quality and I don't have to argue with them to get paid or put in these last 100 small changes for free). Nice tool, but it's not going to put web developers out of business as the title suggests.

I see the need where a small business pays $$ for a website and the designer disappears. But the biz should have used WordPress and gotten the same thing as Buildor, no?
buuuullshit

Put developers out of business???
I don’t think so, there are CMS’s out there for year, which gives you the same functionality. But at the end, there is still someone who needs modified modules, custom graphics etc etc etc
