activeCollab, a web based project management app that launched in 2006 as the open source alternative to Basecamp, has today announced a tool that makes it possible to easily switch from the 37 Signals app.
activeCollab begun with good intentions, as a free open source alternative to Basecamp and in fact, mimicked BaseCamp in a number of ways. Initially free, activeCollab could be modified and you didn’t have to pay for it.
Since then, things have changed. activeCollab has become a profit making business in its own right, abandoning its open source roots and is now being developed primarily by Serbian Ilija Studen.
Unlike Basecamp, there is no hosted option, you are required to install the app on your own servers and pricing varies between $99/year to $249/year.
Their new migration tool is in beta but allows current Basecamp customers to switch, moving all data (including files) to their new active Collab set-up. You will however need a valid activeCollab license, FTP access and also to be sure your Basecamp API is enabled.
