Another day, another iPhone rumor. Starting with its next generation of smartphones, Apple might finally be leaving behind the standard LCD screen in the iPhone in favor of a new and improved OLED display, Japanese news outlet Nikkei reports.
The news comes from Sharp CEO Jeng-wu Tai who briefly discussed possible changes in the forthcoming iPhone 8 model at an event at Tatung University over the weekend. Here’s what he had to say:
The iPhone has been evolving and now it is switching from LTPS (low-temperature poly-silicon) to OLED panels. We don’t know whether Apple’s OLED iPhones will be a hit, but if Apple doesn’t walk down this path and transform itself, there will be no innovation. It is a crisis but it is also an opportunity.
Technophiles have been speculating the possible abandonment of the LCD screen in favor of an OLED panel for some time now, but Tai’s close involvement with Apple as part of his duties at Sharp and Foxconn (where he also holds an executive position) is a much clearer indication that the Cupertino company could finally be moving forward with the new display technology.
Among other things, the iPhone 8 is expected to arrive in three different sizes with glass-backed bodies as well as with a new wireless charging functionality.
