New iPad breaks single-day sales and activation records for AT&T

Just hours after Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the new iPad achieved a ‘record weekend‘ for sales of Apple tablets, major US operator AT&T has also announced a milestone of its own: a new single-day record for its iPad sales and activations.

The new iPad went on sale on March 16, just over a week after Apple held its launch keynote in San Francisco and opening preorders shortly after, which took down the ordering section of its website under the sheer weight of traffic.

AT&T simply stated:

On Friday, March 16, AT&T set a new single-day record for its iPad sales and activations, demonstrating robust demand for the new iPad on the nation’s largest 4G network, covering nearly 250 million people.

This was presumably as a result of Tim Cook’s comments on an Apple investor conference call, where he was detailing the company’s plans to initiate a quarterly dividend of $2.65 a share in the fiscal fourth quarter.

This will begin on July 1, 2012 and it has already set a $10 billion share repurchase program in place which will begin in fiscal 2013, starting September 30, 2012.
