Nokia uses Apple’s iMovie standard loop to announce Microsoft partnership

Nokia uses Apple’s iMovie standard loop to announce Microsoft partnership

When Steven Elop announced the Nokia/Microsoft partnership last week he did so using Apple’s iMovie. And he didn’t just use the software but also the included, royalty free, sound loop included with the software. Guess that is what he meant when he mentioned the “stellar hardware and innovative software and great services”.

Adrian Boioglu, a blogger from Romania watched the announcement and recognized the background music. Check out both movies. Just watch the first 10 seconds or so and listen to the background music:

Yes, that song is Pendulum. It is included with every copy of iMovie, and can be used royalty free but only for non-commercial use:

“You may use the Apple and third party audio loop content (”Audio Content”), contained in or otherwise included with the Apple Software, on a royalty-free basis, to create your own original soundtracks for your video and audio projects. You may broadcast and/or distribute your own soundtracks that were created using the Audio Content, however, individual audio loops may not be commercially or otherwise distributed on a standalone basis, nor may they be repackaged in whole or in part as audio samples, sound effects or music beds.”

Apple and Nokia have been suing and counter-suing each other over patents lately. Wonder if Apple is going to sue Nokia for wrongfully using a sound bit. Guess not, but you can’t help but wonder who exactly is packing up his stuff and clearing out his office over at Nokia right now…

UPDATED: Phillip Schwarzmann, the video editor at Nokia who made the video left a comment:

Hiya! It’s Phil here from Nokia Conversations. I quickly threw together that video. It was Final Cut, not iMovie. It’s legal to use those tracks, but it’s just kinda lame. But I had like minutes to put all these materials together, and just grabbed whatever sounded good.

Busted. :-P
