This really is far too cool and an idea I hadn’t even considered. What you ask? The idea that magazine spreads of today could become mini movies of tomorrow.
Consider your standard woman’s magazine with a four page spread “How to Keep Your Man From Having a Wandering Eye”. With devices like the iPad and other tablets (or booklets) to come, these spreads could result in awesome short video representations that combine both video and text to create something truly engrossing. Incorporate advertising and product placement into it and you’re onto a winner I say.
What you see below is demonstration put together by Alexx Henry and Directors Cory Strassburger and Ming Hsiung for a motion magazine cover and feature spread for Viv Mag – an all digital magazine. More info here but what you need to do is ensure you watch it till at least the 2min mark, and if you’re keen, watch the making of too.
This really is very impressive.

Now there is a good use of tablets and iPads: moving images for articles in digital print. Awesome execution. Might get me to read magazines again. ^_^
It looks pretty, but I'm curious as to whether the product placement will pay for these sorts of spreads. Part of the advantage of print from an advertising perspective is that it forces you to flip through ads to get to the articles you want to see. I'm guessing you could bake in some video ads (which tend to sell at a higher price than stills).
There's something about this that reminds me of the mid-late 1990s. I got a heavy Myst vibe from watching the video for some reason. I haven't heard the “multimedia” buzzword in more than 10 years. I guess it's finally happening?
L'histoire se répète. We have seen how desk top publishing revolutionized the graphic arts industry and the kiosk are stuffed with a multitude of magazines. Time for further fragmenting the magazine market and create critical mass by digital distribution.
Impressive? Visually, this is without a doubt a great step forward and should WOW a lot of people, including advertisers. But, ultimately this content is completely available online from any normal computer, and when tablet competitors come out supporting Flash and Silverlight, will publishers be able to justify $100,000 per issue in development for such a small user base?

Magazines and newspapers are still trying to figure out how to make money off Apple’s iPad by either charging for applications or rope in high-paying advertisers to appear alongside their content. undermount kitchen sink
