In a recent email Dennis Crowley, founder of the popular social GPS app, Foursquare, said the company’s BlackBerry application is “trickling beta out soon.” The official release is slated for “early December,” although at least 50 Foursquare users are already playing with it. Crowley posted the following screenshot of the app to his Flickr page:
Currently, Foursquare’s 100,000 users can access the friend-finder/city guide via iPhone, Android, SMS shortcode (50500) and the mobile version of foursquare.com. The newfound BlackBerry support will throw open the gates to millions of potential new users. Earlier this year Research in Motion announced the sale of its 50 millionth BlackBerry, and that 21 million people were currently using BlackBerry email.
Crowley said the BlackBerry app’s late launch was due in part to wait for the Foursquare API, which was completed last week.
In terms of universal availability, the addition of a BlackBerry app keeps Foursquare just a step ahead of its main competitor, Gowalla, which recently added Android support in addition to its iPhone application. Gowalla, founded by AlamoFire, launched its mobile web support for Android browsers on November 6.
Crowley said Foursquare support on more devices will soon follow. “Now that API is open, who knows?” Crowley hinted. “Palm Pre? Series 60 Nokia?”
