Microsoft have, to their name, more flops than the SX-9. But did they get it right this time? What does Windows 7 bring to the table and why should you care?
This isn’t another post comparing Windows 7 and Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Both operating systems require reasonable upgrade costs (when you reason the hidden costs in a Snow Leopard upgrade.) Both have a strong focus on 64-bit computing: Apple state that Snow Leopard is 64-bit only (even though it defaults to a 32-bit kernel… for now at least.) Both are getting better at harnessing GPU power with GPU core-tapping (Snow Leopard) and CUDA (Windows 7); I’m yet to experience this, but I like what I see. In fact, these operating systems are very comparable and, in true “monkey-see-monkey-do” fashion, both of them are borrowing each other’s best features (Spotlight & Windows Search 4.0 = polymorphism.) Okay, so I compared a little there, but that’s not my purpose today.
Now we’ve established both operating systems are good and have taken a step forward, I’ll spend the rest of the article explaining why Windows 7 is more than just “good” and why you should care.
Why is Windows 7 so Good?
Windows 7 is something special. There. I said it. For brevity’s sake, let’s take a look at my top three favorite features.
1. Jump Lists
I cannot get enough of these little gems (Figure 1.) I don’t need to search for my files, I don’t need to dig through my directory structure, I can just pin a program to the task bar and open my recently edited documents, videos, pictures, and more:

Figure 1 – Jump Lists Make File Access a Breeze.
2. Action Center
The action center (Figure 2) helps you proactively manage your security and maintenance settings. You can tell Windows how often you want alerts of potential problems and threats and make sure your PC stops all attempts to sign your retirement over to hackers.

3. Personalization
Some may say: “Windows is ugly and not as pretty as Mac.” They were right. Windows 7′s visuals are not only pleasing to the eye, but a great source of productivity. For me, being able to switch to my “screenshots mode” theme in three clicks is just fabulous. Being able to customize your PC, beyond this, with such ease is a massive bonus—I’m a visual guy.

I’ve only scratched the surface with what I like. In fact, I like Windows 7 so much, I’ve written a (free) book all about it. Now I ask the question: why should you care if it’s good?
Why Should You Care?
Moore’s law is starting to trip over itself; this law applies to much more than processors. Innovation is not slowing; the pace of technological advancement is quickening. When we hit a ceiling, we spread out, when we hit the walls, we push up again. Apple and Microsoft both have excellent operating systems on the table. For the first time this decade millenium (that’s a long time), we have two fantastic operating systems competing against each other. Not only that, but we have Google (search engine company based in California) and VMware nipping at the heels of the OS market. Then there’s Linux, which, in all it’s jubilation, is going to take over the world one day (apparently.)
Why should you care about Windows 7? Because, whether you like it or not, Windows 7 is driving Apple crazy. Mr Jobs loses sleep at night as he dreams of Ballmer’s rather big face, glowing like the new start button, and wonders what he can do to take the edge. Microsoft got it right and we get to take part in the most exciting time in personal-computing history.
Do You Care?
Are you a Mac user? Will you be using Windows 7 in a VM and why? Do you even need Windows anymore? (I’m talking to you Exchange users out there.) I invite you to voice your views in the comments.

Please explain to the world why these things make Windows 7 stand out next to Vista.
For a Mac user Windows 7 is pretty good, coming from XP and switching somewhere in 2004, Windows 7 is the first step forward for the platform.
However, it is important to keep in mind that a freshly installed Windows usually runs pretty well, it is after a few months of using, installing and removing software, adding files, updating stuff, that things get messy on the Windows-side-of-the-Force. The system slows down, things start to crash, there’s ‘loose files’ everywhere and the file- and folder structure of a PC is a mess.
Windows 7 feels quick compared to Vista, quite usable on a new Boot Camp partition, but having to work with it day by day, seeing it slow down, crap gathering everywhere and things starting to fail…
It is still Windows, with c:\ for your drive, dll’s everywhere, a registry that can get corrupted etc. etc. Don’t be fooled…
Without trying to be jerk, I think this was a very good illustration of how OSs have stopped evolving in any meaningful way.
I suspect MS is paying a lot of money for reviews like this one, they are all over the place. Hardly anybody is speaking the truth: 7 is Vista with a coat of paint. All the same DRM and all the other crap that made Vista such a pariah is all still there. They’ve just painted over it.
Jump lists, action centres, and easy customization? Is that what computing is all about these days? For those things, I should fork out huge sums to replace my XP/Server 2003 which is doing everything I want and never gives me any grief?
Don’t be fooled by the “XP Compatibility” crap, either. They’ve cobbled together a Franken-VM which works, sort of, but it’s so teetery and slow that nobody could take it seriously.
Just finally, are all the poor suckers who actually paid for Vista going to be given a free upgrade to 7? If not, then they can shove it as far as I’m concerned.
Wow, Linux went to 64bits many years ago…
Wow, computing went fancy candy with those visual efect: computers are meant to be like viceogames!
Wow, W7 is more secure!
But as long as mr. Regedit is not eradicated from existence I wont care abot MS Windows.
Cmon people, use Linux for everything that goes in/out your TCP/IP communications by default, never allow windows govern your hardware, use apparmor to jail everything and virtualize XP to run the legacy apps you still need to use.
windows 7 is just a theme over a theme, windows over windows. yes win7 is better than vista but xp is a lot better than vista. its list a theme with some more or less things on it just you see, in 10 years the process will begin all over once more!
I don’t get it. Better than vista? I have had 4 laptops in my house in the last 1.5 years, and have had no issues. So much easier to get on the home network than any other windows I have ever used(I have a netbook with xp sp3, which is the first version of xp I have had that works well, and that part is the same), no issues with drivers, or software, and I used a lot of old software because of my ham radio interest. What I am asking is what’s so wrong with vista? I play it smart with security, again no issues there either, What’s the big deal?
thats why im here..looking to see why i paid to have a vista redesign
i like the old w98 theme though makes it retro
How is XP better than Vista/Win7?
More secure? Hell no.
Faster? Nope – Win7 meets or exceeds XP's perf.
More usable? Heck no.
More app compat? Nope – XP doesn't run a large number of apps that now take advantage of Vista+ features … and XP runs ALL apps FAR LESS securely than Vista/Win7 do.
What am I missing?
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Get rid of the Registry? Sure!
Just as soon as *N*X gets rid of its multitude of config files. Or as soon as *N*X's config files allow me to secure each individual setting with ACL's. Or as soon as *N*X provides me with a system as effective as GroupPolicy.
FAIL, the reasons you posted are all petty “curb appeal” features of the OS.
Everything is outstanding next to Vista.Period.
Couldn’t agree more, I initially upgraded to W7 just because it worked, files didn’t take an age to copy and my laptop and desktop speeded up again.
Then I started using the new taskbar with the pinned applications and its great, yes it’s a mac rip off but I think it works better and the ability to see recent docs for each app just speeds up the working process.
I think at last W7 is an OS that works as I want to and quickly.
Have you never dealt with problems with your Macs? I own pcs and and Macs. My iBook needed three graphic card replacements before I stopped having trouble with it. Still, I love it for the things that it can do. Just like I love pcs for their abilities. Win 7 will upgrade my pcs but, sadly, I can’t upgrade my old iBook with the new OS X
lol i just got windows 7, and before i had it I had windows Vista, and when i upgraded to 7, i could not tell i upgraded until i looked at the search bar and realized it was a little different. I am still looking to find something new on windows 7, the other thing i noticed was the sticky note program, and thats about it.
