New figures today show that social media use is increasingly rapidly, having doubled in the past year.
The UK’s Office of National Statistics has published a report on Internet Access and it reveals that 2009 has seen a boom in social networking. 40% of recent Internet users stated that they posted messages to chat sites, blogs and newsgroups (up from 20% last year).
User generated content is on the rise too. Since last year there has been an increase from 24% to 40% of recent Internet users who state they have uploaded content they had created themselves.
Of course, it’s not really surprising that internet use of all kinds is increasing, but that’s a steep increase for social media and one that will reassure businesses around the world that investing in social media is not a mistake and that it’s far from a passing fad.
