Within the "limited" world of techies this might sound like a good idea, but it's not practical elsewhere. The majority of people, even if they have a cellphone, are not as comfortable working digital devices as they are handing out paper cards.

As a designer (and part of the "keep business cards in use since it's the majority of my work" conspiracy...) the "old fashioned" business card has been around for so long for a good reason. It's a tactile method of sharing not only contact information but also conveying a sense of price. Not everyone can afford a decent business card - ie. your business card is saying; "I'm important enough to have a business card."

Not to mention the value of branding.

Paper business cards are not going anywhere, anytime soon. I can say from my graphic design experience they are my most requested item, and most popular printed product next to 4x6 postcards.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge techie and would definitely use a virtual card via a central online hub or social network, bluetooth or whatever. Problem with companies like Apple (mostly) and others is how they keep their technology proprietary to only work on their products. For this to be successful it would need to be an open source project. Google would be better fit in my opinion.

This post did give me a great idea though....time to find some venture capitalists! lol

"At its core, the business card is merely an information distribution platform and an extremely inefficient one at that."
That is a part of the function of a business card. Depending on culture though, the business card may do much more. Anybody who has lived in or visited Japan for instance would recognise this.

It would feel weird to hand someone a paper business card when everything else we do is digital. All of the services you mentioned are limited. I use a service on my iPhone called BeamME and it is pretty cool. You fill out you vCard and then you can send it to someone as an SMS, Email, or to their Twitter account. The person receiving the vCard doesn't need to be a member or have the app downloaded, it just works. Here is the link: http://rmbrme.com/

There is an obvious evolution taking place to give the ancient business cards a facelift. I agree that most of the applications coming out have to find a way to hit the mass market and essentially change the culture. I don't think apple is the right company to take this on. Apple is gaining more and more market share of personal computers and handheld devices but in order to take this idea mainstream and effectively kill the business cards it will have to be on a windows OS.

The ubiquitous nature of the business card culture if killed will have to be on a universal platform (worldwide) like paper....Windows for now is that platform.

Cheers,

@Steve_Gonzalez

Thanks for the writeup. I'd like to add to the wishlist. Maybe a standard scanner/app for QR/matrix codes would do for this (and more).
