I don't believe that all this that happened from Myspace or You Tube. It had to have come from something else. I have a daughter and I do know that there is always something else that things stem from. This can not be blamed on anything dealing with the internet. For starters you blame the internet and don't stop to think about you not watching what is going on in your childrens lives. My father is a preacher and I have been brought up in a Christian house hold all of my life. I believe that all things happen for a reason and maybe you need to go back and check to see what really happened and not blame the internet or the sites the children go on. Was your daughter friends with these girls? Did she hang out with them? For what reason woud they have to ask her to come over and do these things to her that is the real question here.

So --- let's say the girls went old school, and instead of using Myspace to communicate, they picked up that crazy thing we call "the telephone". Then I guess these rednecks would be calling the phone "Satan's megaphone". I don't care to waste my time on people that are too stupid to understand simple concepts or to take responsibility for what goes on with their children under their own roof.

like little monkeys, (young) humans will continue to plan their schemes to retaliate on their peer targets.
The communities make it more public then it used to be. The behaviour of the 8 girls is shocking and hopefully being addressed properly.
If the channel has a mechanism that acts as an incentive for inappropriate behaviour it should be tackled as soon as possible by the community owner. So far I see the communities picking up on this unacceptable behaviour and act on it: actually it works as a monitoring mechanism. No beating up in dark alleys, but out in the open community....

There are few parents that will put the blame on their own children because they usually love their children and are simply unable to see that there's something wrong with their child. One day one of my eldest sons was kicked in the stomach realy hard by one of his little friends. I grabbed the kid and got really mad with him. When his mother came to pick him up I told her what had happened. Her reaction was: "Oh my god, how did my son feel when you got angry with him?" She didn't realize that my son hadn't been able to breath normally for about ten minutes, she didn't apolagize to me, she didn't ask how my son was doing, all she worried about was her own son! That's the blind love of a parent!

It's parenting, or to be more precise, the lack of it. If these girls think it's alright to beat someone up in the way they did, then there's something wrong with their upbringing. I have accounts on social network sites and have played with the most violent games there are, but I don't feel like beating someone up or killing someone, because my parents taught me that that is wrong. There a more civilised ways of settling disputes.

And besides, what are you gonna do? Ban all cutlery just because someone got stabbed with a fork?

Regarding the moral aspect of the tragic incident, such things do not only happen between teens. Recently a parent bullied a kid because the kid ended a friendship with her own child. The parent pulled a cruel hoax over MySpace which led the kid to kill herself. It sheds a different light on the "anonymity" & on the "kids bully kids" perspective because it transverses those boundaries.

I do not believe that technology is neutral or free of ideology. However, some technologies may enforce existing relationships better than others. This tragic cause shows the "real virtuality" in which the virtual and the real or offline/online distinction can no longer be made.
