Hi Melle,

My thesis was mainly explorative. I tried to answer the question whether social media tools like blogs, wikis and social bookmark offer facilities that support the work of engagement, imagination and alignment. I wanted to find out wether social media tools were usefull in supporting CoPs. My findings where positive.

I'm not familiar with jane Jacobs work, but the way you state it, I guess there are similarities in designing a lively site or a city.

Hey Martin,

How coincidental! :-)
I came across your 2006 thesis on communities of practice only last week and I'm probably using parts of it for my thesis. It's in its early stages so I'm still mostly reading but I think I'll have a 'designing for participation' angle on CoP.

You seem to value Wenger's work but are there any particular insights you gained after the thesis?

I've written on the subject of communities before and I'm really interested in the hybridity between online and offline communities. One of the more experimental pieces I've written on this shows that there's no fundamental difference between designing a lively website and a lively city (based on Jane Jacobs - The Death and Life of Great American Cities). Any thoughts on that?
