The Sahrawi, or Saharaui are the people of the Western Sahara, in the area of present-day Mauritania, southern Morocco, the Western Sahara territory and extreme southwestern Algeria. The term Sahrawi is frequently used in more of a nationalist than an ethnic sense, particularly relating to the disputes over sovereignty in the Western Sahara. As with most Saharan peoples, their culture is mixed, showing Arab, Berber, and black African characteristics.
