US Bobsledding’s Best Hope Is Microsoft-Certified

US Bobsledding’s Best Hope Is Microsoft-Certified

steven-holcombAmerican bobsled driver Steven Holcomb, probably the US’ best hope for a medal in the sliding events, is also a world-class geek.

Holcomb, a world champion driver in the four man bobsled, is currently working on completing his computer science degree. The 2007 World Cup-winning driver is also A+ certified and is a Microsoft Certified Professional.

Holcomb revealed his geek credentials in an interview today, saying that, “It’s just kind of something I grew up with. It blew my mind and I’ve been kind of addicted to technology–computers and video games–ever since.”

Despite the fact that Holcomb’s bobsled career has boomed, netting him 4 World Championship medals (including a gold) and a World Cup title, he’s never strayed far from his love of technology. He’s a year away from completing a Computer Science degree, he is the admin of his own website and he’s got a reputation as the bobsledding tour’s best computer repairman.

Like any geek, Holcomb got a little ribbing from his teammates about his skills. “They did (tease me) at first,  but then they realized that I’m the only one that can fix their computers,” he said.

Interestingly enough, Steve Mesler, one of Holcomb’s sled-pushers, is a Mac guy. That, according to Holcomb, makes for some interesting conversation at the top of the hill.

If you want to keep up with Holcomb, you can follow him on his Twitter account. His two-man bobsled team takes to the hill this weekend and his four-man sled will race February 26-27.
