UK satellite broadcaster BSkyB to launch updated Sky Sports News iPad app

UK satellite TV broadcaster BSkyB is to launch an updated iPad app, introducing a new interface and bringing new content into the mix.

We reported on the launch of the Sky Sports News iOS app last August, which made it possible for viewers to watch Sky Sports News by launching a separate mobile TV app. But with the revamped version for iPad, Sky Sports News can be viewed live through the app.

There will be dedicated homepage for sports such as football (soccer), rugby and cricket, under which all the big current stories will be collated, along with fixtures, results and league positions. Also, as soon as the app is launched, you’ll see instant coverage of the latest breaking news. Andy Cairns, Executive Editor, Sky Sports News, said:

“We aim to be the ultimate sports news service for our customers, and thanks to this new app we can provide them with the latest sports news and in-depth coverage, wherever they happen to be.”

The app will be made available through the Apple App Store and will be free for Sky subscribers, whilst non-subscribers can get in on the act too by making a £4.99 in-app purchase each month, opening up the channel to millions more people.

In June 2010, BSkyB pulled Sky Sports News from Freeview, the UK’s free-to-air digital TV service. And this latest move is indicative of how broadcasters are looking at new ways to monetize content, with apps opening up the door to those not already paid-up subscribers to the channel.
