Vine adds trending hashtag section to track hot and rising topics on the video sharing service

Vine adds trending hashtag section to track hot and rising topics on the video sharing service

Vine announced on Friday that it has released an update to its Explore section in an effort to help its users better discover content. What makes this interesting is that, since it’s a Twitter product, the popular six-second video creator will now include trending hashtags that will allow for more topical posts to be seen. Whether this uses the exact same algorithm as Twitter’s trending tweets (TopTweets) remains to be seen.

In a blog post written by Colin Kroll, Vine’s co-founder and CTO, the company says that since it launched, “there have been a ton of awesome, creative posts that don’t always make it to the popular sections. In many cases, these posts include a hashtag that the community is using.”

It does not appear that users need to download an update to see the new Trending section under the Explore tab. When the app is opened, navigate to the section and scroll down and hashtag topics will appear.

According to StartupStats, Vine has seen 1,300 percent growth just within the past month.

Vine’s support for hashtags is obviously not surprising given that Twitter was one of the early adopters of the feature. But it follows other services that have recently began allowing searches to be made from this format: Flickr, Path, and maybe even Facebook.

This is the latest news from Vine since it announced last week that it would allow users to embed their videos on the Web and released an iOS update that shared user videos through Twitter and Facebook.
