More reasons to love reddit: Community raises over $13k for Cancer fighter’s dream vacation

In case you aren’t hip to reddit, the awesome community where people from all over the world share stories, conversations and participate in social movements, there is an interesting thing that people participate in on the site. It’s called an AMA, which means “Ask Me Anything.” Anyone can do it, and some celebrities have done it in the past.

This time, the AMA was a very important one, carrying the title: “IAmA 23 year old boy with Stage IV Kidney Cancer. I won’t see 24, AMAA (self.IAmA)“. This reddit user invited the community to ask him questions about his diagnosis and experience with Cancer thus far. Needless to say, it’s an amazing thread of conversation.

I highly recommend that you read the entire thing.

If this wasn’t amazing enough, the community decided to take things a step further and set up a fundraiser for “OceanSkys”, and he can now take an awesome trip. How much did the community raise? Over thirteen thousand dollars. Wow. The goal was set at $2,500, but the community clearly went above and beyond. You can go donate right now.

Here’s the description from the fundraising page:

I’m 23 years old and on Fathers Day 2011 I was diagnosed with Stage IV Renal Cell Carcinoma and promptly had my left kidney removed. Since then, I have been on chemo, which is no longer working and the cancer continues to spread. Unlike so many other cancers, this one doesn’t have a survival rate. The chemo I am on is simply a means of “Progression-Free Survival” & it is extremly likely that I will not see my 24th birthday, in April.” – OceanSkys

This type of thing reaffirms my faith in humanity and I really hope that OceanSky has a great vacation and kicks Cancer’s ass. I’m speechless, so I’m going to end this post right now.
