Hitwise: Facebook became the most visited site in Brazil over the weekend

Facebook surpassed Google to become the most visited site by Internet users in Brazil over the weekend, Experian Hitwise reports. In total, Facebook topped the most popular destination ranking for five days this year, with a first occurrence on April 1st.

This is an important milestone for the company, in a market it only recently managed to dominate. As we reported, Facebook finally became Brazil’s most popular social network last January, overtaking Google’s first social network, Orkut.

According to Experian Hitwise’s findings, Facebook approximately attracted 11% of Internet visits last Saturday and Sunday, slightly ahead of Google Brasil’s properties. As this graph shows, this is the result of Facebook’s steady growth over the last few months:

According to SocialBakers, Facebook has over 44m users in Brazil. As Experian points out, its local traffic peaks tend to correspond to weekends and holidays, which tend to boost social networks and forums.
