We’ve heard it all before, but today is the surest certain sign yet that Twitter will launch premium features in the next few days.
During an interview with CBS at the CTIA Wireless convention in Las Vegas, Stone mentions on two occasions that Twitter will be launching its business model “later this month”. Today is the 26th of March, there are only a matter of five days left of this month including a weekend.
“we’re actually going to be later this month revealing exactly how we plan to make a sustainable source of income so that we can build a business”
“there is, we’re getting revenue now through means that aren’t advertising and again what we reveal later this month will be very interesting”
Frustratingly, we’ve heard this before. Initially Stone confirmed to Reuters that Twitter would launch premium features by the end of 2009, that didn’t happen. There was hype leading up to SXSW this month that Twitter would launch its premium features (or an ad platform) at the event that many consider Twitter’s birthplace, that didn’t happen. The interview below however does make it abundantly clear that very soon, premium features that will indicate how Twitter will build a sustainable business will do so.
The one final interesting nugget of his discussion is the revelation that the revenue source will make it possible for the Twitter ecosystem to make money too. “When we develop this monetization platform, it’s not going to just be for us. It will actually extend to all of these apps,” he said.
So whether this is an ad platform (most likely), premium business features or possibly even an official Twitter app store, we’re counting down the days to find out.
