New stats: Twitter users post 600 tweets per second

twitter-logoTwitter has just posted some new stats about the growth of its service and they show just how important the service has become over the past four years.

In the blog post, Kevin Weil of the Twitter analytics team writes:

“Folks were tweeting 5,000 times a day in 2007. By 2008, that number was 300,000, and by 2009 it had grown to 2.5 million per day. Tweets grew 1,400% last year to 35 million per day. Today, we are seeing 50 million tweets per day—that’s an average of 600 tweets per second. (Yes, we have TPS reports.)”

Wow. Those numbers are stripped of spam tweets too. Although there has been doubt that Twitter could sustain its growth, it’s clear that in terms of raw numbers it’s still on a steep curve upwards.

By the way, for those wondering what a TPS reports is, sayeth Wikipedia: “A TPS report (Testing Procedure Specification) is a document used in software engineering, in particular by a Software Quality Assurance group or individual, that describes the testing procedures and the testing process.”
