Image verification company TRUEPIC today launched its digital platform, including a mobile app and an SDK for other apps, helping businesses and date-hungry people everywhere ensure what you see is actually what you get.
TRUEPIC calls itself a “digital notary for photos.” Its aim is to combat image falsification:
As of March 2017, five of the top 10 free photo and video iOS apps are used for editing, modifying and/or filtering images and videos; a ratio that jumps to 9 of the top ten paid apps. As a result, online businesses – from insurance carriers, rental sites and classifieds to dating sites and beauty vendors – must be able to validate shared photos in order to stem the lost revenue bred from fraud and consumer mistrust.
When you upload a photo to the TRUEPIC app — or an app that has the SDK — it checks the image to ensure it hasn’t been digitally altered in any way. It also stamps the image with a watermark, a geocode, and a URL. The URL leads to the image’s location in TRUEPIC’s vault, where it’s stored for verification purposes.
This comes in especially handy on marketplaces such as eBay or Airbnb, where customers want to make sure a product hasn’t been photoshopped. I also expect to see lots of images with the TRUEPIC watermark crop up on Tinder in the future.
The company closed a $1.75 million round of seed funding. Private beta testers include insurance and rental car companies. TRUEPIC’s app is available for individual users on Android and iOS.
