San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose to get serious Gigabit Internet upgrade from AT&T

The internet gods have finally smiled upon the Bay Area. Although its one of the biggest tech hubs in the modern world, it has had to stand idly by as other cities are given Gigabit Internet capabilities, settling for spotty coverage from area providers. But now that will change!

According to the San Jose Mercury News, San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose — along with 35 other cities nationwide — will get Gigabit Internet through AT&T’s ‘GigaPower’ service. Already live in Los Angeles, the new option will make the Internet 20 times faster for those who are currently on AT&T’s fastest plan, and about four times faster than the fastest plan of its biggest competitor, Comcast.

The service is already live in certain parts of Cupertino, California.

AT&T’s expansion will put it in direct competition with Google, as the company announced it would bring its Fiber service to San Jose and surrounding areas. The Gigapower expansion could begin in certain areas as soon as January, but the company won’t say which specific neighborhoods are first in line.

It also won’t list pricing for the area. But in all honesty: if you want fast Internet, you’ll likely happily throw money for the privilege.
