Restaurant recommendation service Zomato acquires Urbanspoon, enters US and Australia

Restaurant recommendation service Zomato acquires Urbanspoon, enters US and Australia

Restaurant discovery service Zomato today announced it has acquired Urbanspoon to expand its global reach in the food-recommendation business.

Zomato serves several regions, including India (where it is headquartered), the UK, Brazil and others. With the acquisition of Urbanspoon, however, the company is making its entry into the US and Australia markets.

The acquisition will see Zomato’s coverage increased from about 300,000 restaurants to over 1 million restaurants across the globe, more than doubling traffic from 35 million visits per month to over 80 million. The company says both teams will be working closely to integrate Urbanspoon’s services into Zomato over the coming months, moving all of Urbanspoon’s traffic to Zomato.com.

Along with the acquisition, Zomato intends to deepen its reach in the European market over the next year, projecting an investment of over $20 million, and using the UK as a European hub for its service.
