Microsoft starts shipping HoloLens to devs today

Microsoft is taking another step in building its holographic technology, the HoloLens. Announced at Microsoft Build in San Francisco, Microsoft’s Alex Kipman announced that the dev model would be shipped today to devs. The dev kit, which was announced last month, currently costs a hefty $3,000.

In addition to shipping the HoloLens, Microsoft is releasing its community-voted application — a tool called ‘Galaxy Explorer’ — on both the Windows Store and Github.

So, developers who are interested in concepts explored within the app, including spatial mapping and gestures, can pick apart the code and figure out how to make it work for them.

HoloLens is working steady on releasing to the public, beginning in particular with enterprise companies. Partners on the HoloLens include Lowe’s, Stryker, Audi and NASA – the latter of which will offer a Destination Mars program for devs to explore outer space via HoloLens.

Although the development is getting underway, don’t gear up to have the consumer model anytime soon. This is the first step in a long road.
