Turkey economy minister Zafer Çağlayan has approached Microsoft and Apple to help with the distribution of 15 million tablets among students in the country as part of its FATIH Project, according to a report by the Hurriyet Daily News.
In a statement to the newspaper, he said that an unnamed senior VP at Microsoft had expressed interest in the project and was willing to send teams from the company to help Turkish authorities deploy its software among the students. A meeting with Apple executives also yielded positive results, with the company assuring the Turkish minister that it would co-operate with software companies in the country working on this project.
The FATIH project aims to put the latest gadgetry in the service of education by deploying tablets in 600,000 classes across 40 thousand schools in the country. The Turkish Government is looking to spend about 3 billion TL ($1.7 billion) on this ‘Smart Class’ initiative and hopes to complete the project within the next three years.
