Microsoft taps OCR to help you extract text from photos on SkyDrive

Microsoft has announced a new feature that extracts text from images stored on your camera roll when viewed on SkyDrive.com.

In a partnership with Bing, the optical character recognition (OCR) tech is compatible with English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, and German. So, irrespective of your location, if your browser’s language is set to one of these languages, SkyDrive should be able to extract textual information from it.

This won’t of course be for everyone – but on those occasions when you want to pull out text from a sign, magazine or menu you snapped, well, you now can.
