Microsoft is finally investigating the Windows Phone 7 phantom data issue

Microsoft is finally investigating the Windows Phone 7 phantom data issue

If you pay attention to the world of Microsoft, you must have heard by now that a large swath of Windows Phone 7 users are having data usage issues. It seems that Windows Phone 7 handsets are over-consuming bandwidth by the bucket, even when on WiFi and without user prompt.

Given that smart phone users are often on a short leash in terms of data consumption per month, this can be a very costly issue. Some users are reporting erroneous data use of over 4 megabytes and hour, putting a serious dent in their available bandwidth for personal use.

Microsoft has now stated that it is looking into the matter with the following statement:

“We are investigating this issue to determine the root cause and will update with information and guidance as it becomes available.”

It has been speculated that perhaps the upcoming first update to the Windows Phone 7 platform will contain a fix of the problem. Microsoft may not want to wait that long to solve the issue, as it could cost users heavily. That could lead to legal action. In short, this is a problem that Microsoft should desperately not want to have so early in the life of WP7.

We have reached out to Microsoft for comment and are awaiting a response.

Update: Microsoft just got back to us and repeated the same thing that they told the BBC. Once we hear something new we will let you know.
