Hulu finds a new stream of revenue as FremantleMedia will sell its original content abroad

Hulu has closed a partnership with the audiovisual distributor FremantleMedia Entreprises (FME), the film & TV streaming platform announced on its blog, ahead of a dedicated panel at SXSW.

Following the agreement, FME will be responsible for selling international rights to Hulu’s original programming. In practical terms, it means that foreign TV channels and other platforms may soon license some of Hulu’s exclusive content, such as ‘Battleground’ and Morgan Spurlock’s documentary series ‘A Day in the Life’.

As we reported, 2011 marked Hulu’s entry into original content, and this is just a start. Not only is Hulu keeping on adding new original shows, but the trend is industry-wide, with other online platforms such as Netflix and Amazon increasingly leaning towards  original content production.

With today’s announcement, Hulu will now able to find an additional source of monetization for its original programming. While these series are available on the free section of Hulu’s site in the US, it has invested a sizeable amount of money in content, leading it to consider raising more financing this year.
