More bad news for News: Herald Sun apologizes for distributing malware

Users visiting the Herald Sun’s website may have been exposed to a virus, the paper has admitted on its site.

The apology was tucked away on the bottom right of the site where most users would skip over it, and suggested that those who have visited recently run a virus scan.

Users who authorized the installation of the virus after a pop-up appeared while visiting the site may have been infected. According to The Age, the Herald Sun says the virus was placed on their systems following a hacking attack.

The Herald Sun is a Melbourne newspaper owned by News Limited. In light of the beating News Limited took following the News of the World phone hacking scandal and subsequent closure, such news is more embarrassing for the company than it might have been had the infection occurred at another time.
