Significant news out of the UAE today with telecommunications provider Etisalat being ordered to pay an Abu Dhabi resident AED 30 million (8 Million US) for using his invention without permission.
What is the invention you ask? Reportedly a system that transmits “high-quality video over the Internet”. Etisalat claimed that it had purchased the system from Chinese company Huawei but the courts disagreed and Mosa Isa Mosa Al Amiri walked away with AED30 million compensation while Etisalat are forced to shut down the mobile TV service.
Al Amiri won the case after appealing twice against experts’ verdicts with finally, a three-member panel being set up who agreed that Etisalat’s system depended on the same idea of the patented invention.
