LastPass lets you manage passwords for free on any device as pricing structure changes

LastPass lets you manage passwords for free on any device as pricing structure changes

LastPass, the popular app for managing your passwords, now has a free tier for managing your passwords on mobile as well as the desktop.

The free tier allows you to sync passwords for free, so long as you use the same type of device (smartphones sync to other smartphones free, for instance). Previously, the desktop version was free, but using it on mobile was bundled into the $12 subscription cost.

If you want to sync from a smartphone to a tablet (or vice versa), that will also cost $12 per year.

The reason for allowing everyone free use of its mobile apps is simple: this is a mobile-first world. LastPass hasn’t changed its business model much since launching in 2008, and the proliferation of mobile devices — especially for business purposes — made this a logical choice.

Of course, it’s great news if you use one mobile device for everything. For the $12 maintenance fee, a different app (like 1Password) may suit you better long-term.
