If you thought you’d turn to Medium as a means to shame or harass others, think again. The site has changed its rules, and now prohibits acts of public shaming, revenge porn, and posting private information on others (doxxing).
Medium says it thought long and hard about how to best navigate the line between free speech and protecting users, but believes this is what’s best for its community:
We want Medium’s rules to be like the most human and practical kinds of rules — rules of hospitality, rules of the road, golden rules. They show what we think it means for our guests to treat each other civilly, at least, and admirably, if possible. Now it’s our job to apply those rules thoughtfully and fairly.
Further, Medium says if you come across content you feel is harassing or otherwise violating its rules, you’ll speak with a real person about it, not an algorithm. Other sites, like Twitter, don’t offer such one-on-one personal handling of sensitive situations.
Medium isn’t stifling your voice; you can still be vocal about your ideas, you just can’t disrespect others.
