Amazon has filed its first ever lawsuit over fake product reviews

Amazon has filed its first ever lawsuit over fake product reviews

Amazon has filed a lawsuit against four websites – buyamazonreviews.com, buyazonreviews.com, bayreviews.net and buyreviewsnow.com – for allegedly selling fake product reviews.

When you are buying a product on Amazon, you tend to scroll down and check out the user reviews underneath the listings, so in order for these to be helpful, they need to be real.

Luckily, Amazon has said that the fake 4- and 5-star reviews don’t appear to be widespread, so you can trust the majority of what you read.

The suit was filed on Wednesday in King County Superior Court, and accuses Jay Gentile of California (operator of the fake websites) of false advertisement, trademark infringement and violations of the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act and Washington Consumer Protection Act.

Amazon is requesting that the court force the websites to cease using its company’s name and stop selling reviews, as well as seeking attorney’s fees and triple damages.
