Netflix is reportedly making a live-action ‘The Legend of Zelda’ show

Nintendo fans, rejoice! While the dream of a ‘The Legend of Zelda’ film adaptation may not yet come to fruition, a new live-action Netflix show based on the video game series could be coming to a computer near you.

The Wall Street Journal reports the show is in the early development stages. WSJ says Netflix is working closely with Nintendo as it looks for writers, its source describing the show as “Game of Thrones for a family audience.”

In case you’ve never picked up a video game controller in your life, the games are typically set in fictional land called Hyrule, and follow a young boy named Link who must save Princess Zelda.

It’s a cliché basic plot, but over the course of nearly 29 years and 20 games, the storylines have deepened; the extent of Hyrule’s mythology can match some of the greater film and book fantasy series, so the creators should have plenty of material to work with.

Hopefully it turns out better than the terrible animated 1989 show. Nintendo is typically highly protective of its intellectual property and rarely licenses it out for other media. With some of the great original content on Netflix, however, the platform may just do the series justice.
