Dish Network announces Sling TV, a live TV streaming service for $20 a month

At its CES press conference, Dish Network announces Sling TV, a live television streaming service that includes channels like ESPN, TBS, Food Network, HGTV and Cartoon Network starting at $20 a month. Among the support devices are Roku, Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, LG Smart TVs and Xbox One. Customers can also stream Sling TV via their Mac, iOS, Android and PC devices. The company plans to expand its list of compatible devices in “the coming months.”

In addition to live TV streaming, Sling TV will also offer video-on-demand content and add-on options for extra channel packs for child-friendly shows or sports entertainment. Sling TV also offers subscribers a 3-Day Replay feature for select channels so they can rewind and watch shows that have aired in the past three days.

Sling TV’s interface will allow subscribers to filter shows down by genre (sports, kids, etc.) or prioritize frequently-watched shows so they don’t have to search through channels to find their favorite content.

Sling TV will be available without a contract, providing a cheap alternative for those who only watch select channels on their cable service. Dish explicitly says the service is targeted to millennials ages 18 to 35, following the trends of other internet content providers like Spotify, Netflix, Hulu, and most recently, HBO.

Customers can subscribe to Sling TV when it becomes available later this month by downloading the app on compatible devices.
