BSkyB rebrands to become simply Sky

BSkyB begone! The name that came into being when Sky Television merged with British Satellite Broadcasting in 1990 has finally been shelved. From now on, it’s simply Sky. With the company having completed its deal to buy Sky Italia from 21st Century Fox and snap up 57% of Sky Deutschland, “British” felt a little too parochial.

Sky says it’s now “Europe’s leading entertainment group” with 20 million customers across Italy, Germany, Austria, the UK and Ireland.  It has slimmed down its name to reflect that. It’s also listing on the London Stock Exchange with the symbol SKY.

The name change still needs to be approved by shareholders but they’re unlikely to stand in its way.
