Following their second statement last month about third-party applications accessing Snapchat users’ identities and content, the ephemeral messaging service will now begin issuing warnings to users on such apps and asking them to change their passwords to protect their privacy.
“Starting today, we will notify Snapchatters when we have detected that they may be using third-party apps and we’ll ask those Snapchatters to change their password and stop using unauthorized apps,” announced Snapchat on its blog.
The move is an effort to improve the security and reliability of Snapchat’s service, which is most often being compromised via third-party apps making use of Snapchat’s not-so-private private API. Let’s hope that it doesn’t take another major privacy scandal to get the company to fix things once and for all.
