Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been expanded today with a unified alerts platform that gives app developers the ability to send push notifications to users on iOS, Android and Kindle Fire hardware simultaneously.
Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS) with ‘Mobile Push’ is now available to all AWS customers and supports up to one million push notifications per month, at no extra cost. Developers can pay an extra dollar to publish and deliver an extra million messages thereafter.
For startups with a presence on multiple mobile platforms, it’s important to be able to offer user a near identical experience across every type of device. This can be vital for analyzing and executing complex marketing campaigns, reminder messages or in-app discounts, where timing and word of mouth is paramount.
The roll-out expands the functionality of Amazon SNS, but also ensures that apps available to Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD customers aren’t left out. Given that Amazon wants to dominate pretty much every space at the moment, including tablets – that’s not a bad strategy.
