Spain’s Social Point nabs another $3.9m from Greylock to help take on Zynga et al

A little over six months after Social Point took on $7.4 million to help it grow into the Zynga of mobile gaming, news has emerged that the Barcelona-based startup has taken on another $3.9 million, this time from Greylock Partners, which has also participated in previous rounds.

Social Point was founded in 2008 and prior to last July’s bumper investment, it had raised a $3.4 million Series A round from Nauta Capital, which brings Social Point’s total investments so far to almost $15 million.

As with many European gaming firms, Social Point had a good year last year, with Facebook revealing its top-rated games of 2012. This was led by FreshPlanet’s SongPop, though Zynga had six games in the top 25. Interestingly though, Social Point was the only top-25 developer with a game ranking in Facebook’s top 5 of the year, according to the AppData leaderboard (based on monthly active users).

Indeed, Social Point’s Dragon City, available on Facebook, hit second spot behind SongPop, while Social Empires, available on Facebook and iOS, hit the giddy heights of 22nd spot. Aside from Zynga, only three game developers, namely Social Point, King.com (UK) and Supercell (Finland) had more than one game on the best-rated social games list.

Social Point is garnering more than 30 million users per month across its Facebook and mobile apps.
