Google Drive for Work and Education add 5 settings for more control within organizations

Google Drive for Work and Education add 5 settings for more control within organizations

Google today announced that it will add new control settings for organizations using Google Drive for Work and Google for Education. These settings will help groups control which departments can share and download files, receive alerts, reset passwords and establish trusted domains with whom to share documents.

Specifically, Google’s five new settings are outlined below:

  • Organizations can now prevent people from downloading, copying and printing files under Information Rights Management (IRM) to only allow select users access to these documents
  • You can now send Drive files to non-Google users by sharing to their e-mail addresses
  • Drive for Work admins can set sharing permissions based on departments within a company
  • Set custom alerts for when important changes occur to shared documents, such as Calendar adjustments or new app installs
  • Employees can now reset their own passwords

Google specified that regular Drive users will also be able to preview shared documents without signing in, and set IRM controls for their own files.

The above features are set to roll out to Drive for Work customers today and will continue to expand over the next month. Some other features in the works include the ability to set expiring access for files that are only needed temporarily, and adding trusted domains to share between organizations or classrooms.
