Move over, Skype. Google Voice is coming to the desktop.

Move over, Skype. Google Voice is coming to the desktop.

For those of us who know and love Google Voice, there’s simply no replacement.  The issue though is that there was no way to do a voice call from the desktop.  In order to make or receive a call, you have to be using the phone to which your Google Voice number is tied.

TechCrunch is reporting, though, that these days are likely numbered.  Since Google’s purchase of Gizmo5 in November of 2009, there have been rumors of how Google might use the VoIP company’s technology.  An unnamed source, however, has confirmed that Google is testing functionality of a desktop version of Google Voice internally.

Look for the release very soon, likely in limited beta.  Don’t have a Google Voice account?  Be fast, leave a comment and I’ll personally send you an invitation.
