Rovio to launch a weekly Angry Birds animation series

Rovio‘s Head of Animation, Nick Dorra, has revealed at the MIPTV conference in Cannes, France, that the firm is to launch a weekly Angry Birds animation series.

Although plans for a series have been previously reported earlier this year, more details have now emerged. 52 episodes are to be produced in-house, each around 3 minutes in length, starting in fall this year. The Finnish firm plans to launch an app to distribute the series through. However, it will look into partnerships to ensure that the series gets to as wide an audience as possible, on as many devices as possible.

Dorra said that its existing Angry Birds animations, some of which have clocked up tens of thousands of views, are a great way to connect with existing fans, and important for acquiring new fans. “Animation in the forefront of what we’re doing with our brand,” he noted.

Rovio, which acquired animation studio Kombo and hired a former Marvel executive last year, plans to expand its animation output with other projects in 2013. “But for now you’ll have to watch our shorts,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dorra tackled a misconception that all additional content for Angry Birds Space would all be paid-for. Additional free levels are on the way, he assured fans.
