Europe Drives Nokia Navigation Software Downloads

nokiaoviNokia has confirmed over 1.4 million  downloads of its Ovi Maps mobile navigation software since its launch on 21st January 2010, with four European countries amongst the top five countries rushing to use the software.

The UK, Italy, Germany and Spain represent Europe alongside China in the top five countries downloading the app, which offers free walk and drive navigation to users of  Nokia GPS-enabled handsets.

Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Nokia said “We’re averaging a download a second, 24 hours a day.  The number of people now using their Nokia for navigation, and as a result looking for more location-aware software, is growing faster than even we predicted.”

Nokia has been investing heavily in its development of location and navigation-based services and believes that its strategy of offering  OVI Maps  as a free download to its customers will enable it to  to quickly create a significant user base to which it can market new features, offers and services.

From March all GPS-enabled Nokia smart-phones will come pre-loaded with the latest version of Ovi Maps, bundled with local country map data, as well as access to Lonely Planet and Michelin travel guides.
