Viber and Tango’s messaging services temporarily banned in Bangladesh

Viber and Tango’s messaging services temporarily banned in Bangladesh

The Bangladeshi government placed a temporary ban on mobile messaging services Viber and Tango yesterday for undisclosed reasons, reports AFP.

On orders from local law enforcement agencies, The Bangladesh Telecommunications and Regulatory Commission had shut down both services “for the time being,” according to a commission spokesman who didn’t offer any explanation for the BTRC’s decision.

However, it’s likely that the services were shut down to prevent anti-government protesters from communicating freely with each other. Activists from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its allies are in a struggle to overthrow the current government, with recent protests turning violent and killing 27 people in the past two weeks.
