Amazon’s India site has started offering mobile phones and cameras for sale, featuring a 10 percent discount on selected phones and a 15 percent discount on selected cameras.
The phones listed include those from Samsung – with its flagship Galaxy S4 retailing at INR38,699 ($648) – as well as Apple – with the iPhone 5 selling for INR43,989 ($737). The site also lists several other smartphones from Nokia and HTC, as well as local Indian brands Micromax and Karbonn.
Cameras being sold on Amazon’s India site include point-and-shoots from Canon, Sony and Nikon, as well as DSLRs from Canon and Nikon.
Earlier this month, Amazon took a big stride into India’s e-commerce market when it launched its Marketplace site in the country, and started listing Kindle tablets and e-readers for sale some time later (the regular Kindle can be purchased now, while the Kindle Fire and Kindle Paperwhite are only available from June 27). The company’s latest move makes it clear that it will be expanding its product offerings to become a comprehensive e-commerce retailer in the country.
India is the tenth country where Amazon Marketplace is available . The service is a central point from which independent retailers can sell a range of goods and products from third parties using the ‘marketplace’ model, and while restrictions on foreign direct investment in India have thus far prevented Amazon from selling direct to consumers in the country, hosting a site where third parties do the selling manages to sidestep the issue.
The company launched Junglee – a price comparison and aggregation site — in February 2012 to explore the e-commerce scene in the massive country, which is the second-most populous country in the world with over 1.2 billion people.
