Traffic mapping service Waze, which Google acquired three years ago, has a smart idea for helping people avoid jams due to road closures near large events like concerts and parades.

The company has launched its Waze Global Event Partner Program, which will allow event organizers and venue owners to share information about road closures in advance or in real-time, so that users of the app can avoid those routes and cut down on the time they spend in traffic.

Waze has tied up with 20 partners at launch, including the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon series and sports teams like the Atlanta Falcons and Washington Redskins. The new feature will likely become more useful as more partners sign on to send out notifications to users.

A full list of events covered by Waze is available on this page; organizers can visit this link to partner with Waze.
