Lyft’s carpooling-with-strangers service Lyft Line is coming to New York City

Lyft’s carpooling-with-strangers service Lyft Line is coming to New York City

Lyft has just announced that it is bringing its carpool car-sharing feature to New York. Soon residents will be able to sit with strangers in another stranger’s car for a discounted ride in the five boroughs.

Launching tomorrow, New York will be the third market to receive Lyft Line following San Francisco and Los Angeles. Like those other markets, riders will be able to select Lyft Line from the Lyft app for a cheaper ride to their destination. Of course, along the way the driver will be picking up other passengers.

Lyft says that passengers could save up to 60 percent on their fare and that driver could pocket more cash because they are receiving additional fares (and tips) along the same route.

If a passenger selects Lyft Line as their preferred method of traveling, even if the driver doesn’t pick up another person, the original rider still gets a discount fare which is presented to them when they book the ride.

The service launches tomorrow in the five boroughs with more areas being rolled out in 2015.
