Line for iPad launches with messaging support, but no voice or video calls

Japanese company Line has launched an iPad incarnation of its popular messaging app.

Rather than plumping for a universal app that’s optimized for the phone and tablet form factors, the new addition arrives as a standalone entity. But it does lack some key features from its iPhone app, which suggests this is being aimed at those already using Line on their phones.

Indeed, you’re not able to create new accounts from within the iPad app, and doesn’t support voice or video calls either, despite what it says in the App Store description: “Line can be used anywhere and anytime to make free calls and send messages.”

There’s also no Sticker Shop or Timeline support – so this is purely about messaging.

Though Line came to prominence in its native Japan, the company has been making moves to gain traction elsewhere too. Line executives recently told us that they’re planning a big push on the US market, with a particular focus on games.

Line for iPad is available to download globally now.
