GetGlue updates its iOS app to become a ‘social remote control’ (at least for some US users)

GetGlue has been a prominent ‘social TV’ app for about as long as we can remember social TV being discussed. It’s always been a bit ‘Foursquare for TV’, and with a new iOS update today it’s, just like Foursquare, toning down check-ins and emphasising discovery.

There are new ‘What to Watch’ and ‘Search & Discover’ sections that recommend shows and movies on broadcast TV and streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. If you have a DirecTV box, you can even change channels and check in to a show straight from the app. Also on the menu are redesigned show pages that include the ability for fans to share user-generated gifs and videos with others – yeah, they’re looking at you, Breaking Bad fans.

The new features are US-centric and only available on iOS, but an Android update is coming next week, and international support is planned for 2014.
