Foursquare updates its Android app to bring back points and add categorization for venue images

Foursquare, the ubiquitous check-in application, has been updated for Android devices.

The latest changes seem to be pleasing users already as the points system has returned for check-in detail pages. As one reviewer over on the Google Play page put it “Back to points – back to 5 stars”.

Other features in the refresh include a bold type for shout-outs and mentions of friends when you check in, a way to report spam, offensive content or material that is no longer relevant. This will appear on the Tip detail page within the app.

There is also new categorization of venue photos, all the better for finding more relevant content and less in the way of duplicates. Users are also able to make use of the quick save capability on the activity stream.

Android users often get to wait for updates in comparison with their iOS-using brethren. September saw the Android version updated with the return of ‘nearby check-ins from friends’ that arrived with iOS in August. That said, syncing updates across all devices is a monumental task for most applications.

The Foursquare user base is vociferous when it comes to changes within the app. The return of ‘nearby check-ins from friends’ came after it was listed as a most-missed feature. The return of points is bound to be a pleasure for those who provided feedback calling for its return.

At the very least with the emphasis on friends and the ability to influence the content, Foursquare is certainly working on making its application more relevant to its users. And with 25 million across different platforms, that’s a considerable group to please.
